SFI Norman PhD School

29 April, 2009 by Ina

- This PhD school is a great way for me to stay updated within the different subjects related to manufacturing, says Vagnorius Zydrunas from Lithuania.
I also think it is a big value for me to meet other PhD students interested in manufacturing.   I haven't got that chance so much before after I came to Norway two years ago to study.

A competitive manufacturing industry focusing on value creation, flexibility and efficiency, depends on highly qualified researchers with cross-disciplinary training at PhD level.
SFI Norman is a leading research centre in manufacturing and this spring school aims at providing high-level classes. Classes are in Trondheim (Norway) and are split on two weeks from April 20th-24th and from June 8th-12th.

We cover areas such as: manufacturing technology, innovation management, industrial organization, industrial economics, production economics, value chain optimization, quality management, sustainable production and product development.

An other PhD student just arriving from England, Daryl Powell, says he thinks the course gives him the right approach to the different knowledge fields in manufacturing.

- I think they have made the right choice of subjects; they are interesting and within areas PhD students like us should know more about. The only think I would like to see more of, is a bigger participation from the manufacturing industry. I would like to hear more from the companies involved in SFI Norman, not only from researchers.

The other students from among others China, Sweden, Poland and Iran brag about the initiative from SFI Norman. They come from different backgrounds but find the different subjects interesting and valuable. But they also point out that the lectures vary in performance and that some find the economy lectures difficult since they don't have that knowledge background. On the other hand, some of the students find these lectures easy. It's not easy to make the perfect program, but SFI Norman will take all the feedback and aim to be even better next time.
